who told me news of the Battle at the Little Big Horn
one of America’s enduring mysteries
he had been on a dig at the battle site
the first one ever
it yielded evidence from the ground
that revealed a different tale than legend and memories believed
memories of those who had been there were wrong
fractured, bent, created
real to them perhaps, but wrong
memories cannot really connect us to our past
we create our memories
and ourselves
